This September, members of the HCRS Billing Team traded their typical office setting for the community to make a difference at the Springfield Family Center. Heather Lockwood, Karen Whitney, Jennifer Rupp, and Melanie Murphy joined forces for a day of volunteering that brought their team closer together while supporting an essential community resource.

The team rolled up their sleeves to prepare lunches, unload donations, restock shelves, and organize inventory at the Center, which distributes over 100 meals daily and provides customized food boxes for those in need. Beyond the tasks, the experience offered a window into the pressing food needs faced by many in the local community.

“Our time at the Springfield Family Center was incredibly rewarding,” shared Lockwood. “Even a few hours can make a real difference.” Whitney echoed the sentiment: “It was eye-opening to see how many people rely on these services daily. Supporting organizations like this is so important.”

Meeting the Need, One Meal at a Time

The Springfield Family Center has become a lifeline for many, offering fresh produce, grains, meats, and even pet food. Since moving to Springfield Plaza, the Center has seen a surge in demand, making volunteer efforts like this critical to sustaining its programs.

During their visit, the team connected with Operations and Kitchen Manager Steffanie Baker and Food Shelf Coordinator Keegan Mack-Chase, who shared insights into the Center’s impactful work—including their holiday food box program for local families.

This experience served as a powerful reminder that community needs don’t pause after the holidays. It inspired the Billing Team to take their involvement a step further, organizing a food drive at HCRS’ Springfield office to support the Center’s holiday initiative.

Together, we donated approximately 100 pounds of non-perishable items, along with a $50 Shaw’s gift card to support local families in need. These contributions will help provide holiday essentials and minimize food insecurity in the Springfield community, ensuring a brighter season for many!

A Stronger Team, A Stronger Community

For the Billing Team, volunteering was about more than giving back—it strengthened their bond as colleagues and as members of the Springfield community. “It’s meaningful to work together as a team while also making a positive impact,” said Murphy.

The ripple effect of their efforts will be felt throughout the season and beyond, reminding us all of the power of community and collaboration.
